A new study from France found that patients with high blood levels of Vitamin D had a lower chance of developing macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness associated with aging. Conversely, those with lower levels of Vitamin D in their blood had a higher chance of developing late-stage macular degeneration. It is important to note, though, that this study simply shows an association between Vitamin D levels and macular degeneration, but does not prove low levels actually cause the problem. Certainly, nutrition plays a role in eye health. In LASIK surgery, we have long been aware that taking oral omega-3 supplements in the form of fish oil and flax seed oil helps with post-operative dry eye and with healing. Vitamin C has been shown to help with healing after PRK laser eye surgery. Given Vitamin D’s important role in general health and physiology throughout the body, it would not be surprising if adequate levels of this vitamin also were important for eye health.
