Study: Satisfaction High 5 Years After LASIK

A study recently published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery found that visual performance and patient satisfaction remained high at the five year mark after LASIK laser vision correction. This long term study, conducted in Scotland, looked at 2530 LASIK patients with an overall average age of 42.4 years. Pre-operative prescriptions ranged from a high degree of nearsightedness (-11.0 diopters) all the way to a high degree of farsightedness (+4.88 diopters). Five years after surgery 90.6% of patients had distance vision of 20/20 without glasses or contacts when using both eyes together naturally. Eye discomfort was no higher than seen in patients who never had undergone surgery. Overall, 91.0% said they were satisfied with their vision. I am often asked “does LASIK wear off?” This data shows excellent outcomes at the five year mark and, based on over twenty years experience of performing LASIK, I have every reason to think the excellent results will persist if the study is extended to look at ten year results and beyond.
