A patient from Oxnard asked me if there were any very large studies of patients having LASIK. Just last week, Kerry Solomon, MD gave an important talk to the annual Refractive Surgery Subspecialty Conference at the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Solomon reviewed a meta-analysis (overview study) of 67,893 eyes that had undergone LASIK between 2008 and 2015. First, Dr. Solomon noted that modern LASIK surgery had advanced spectacularly and had become even more safe and effective since it was first approved by the FDA nearly 20 years ago. Dr. Solomon noted, “By every metric we looked at, our LASIK results are better than they were 10 to 15 years ago.” In a series of 61,331 eyes having LASIK , 90.8% could see 20/20 without glasses and, in a series of 59,833 eyes having LASIK, 99.5% could see well enough to pass a driver’s test without glasses (20/40 or better). These results greatly surpassed the standards set by the FDA for approval of LASIK laser vision correction. Results we have presented at academic meetings from our techniques at the Shapiro Laser Eye Center are even better than the results Dr. Solomon presented in the meta-analysis. Contemporary LASIK can offer truly outstanding outcomes, particularly when modern customized wavefront technology is incorporated.
