American Academy of Ophthalmology Receives $1 Million Donaton for Laser Surgery LASIK and PRK Education Center

Laser Surgery Education Center Will Help Ophthalmologists Around the World Access New Developments in Laser Eye Surgery. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) announced that it has received a $1 million dollar donation from Charles Munnerlyn, PhD, and Judith G. Munnerlyn to establish the Dr. Charles R. and Judith G. Munnerlyn Laser Surgery Education Center. The Center is expected to launch next year.

This new Munnerlyn Laser Surgery Education Center will be web-based and will provide ophthalmologists in the US and internationally with a central location for accessing information on the newest advances in all forms of laser eye surgery used by ophthalmologists, including LASIK and PRK. The Laser Surgery Education Center will focus on providing education resources in basic science principles, advances in laser surgery technology, systems-based patient safety programs, and pre- and post-operative care and management systems.

Dr. Munnerlyn is recognized internationally as a pioneering research engineer in the field of optics and lasers in ophthalmology. He designed the first excimer laser for laser vision correction eye surgery. He is famous for developing the “Munnerlyn Formula” which defines the depth and diameter of the excimer laser ablation to achieve a particular amount of correction. This Center will represent yet one more contribution that Dr. Munnerlyn has made to improving patient’s lives on a global scale.See Also
