One of the great myths about LASIK is the claim that eye doctors would never have LASIK on their own eyes. It turns out this is completely false! An important study recently put this myth to rest. This study, by my friend and colleague Guy Kezirian, M.D., showed that eye surgeons who perform LASIK were four times more likely to undergo LASIK or PRK laser vision correction surgery on their own eyes than was the general population. Furthermore, 91% of all eye surgeons surveyed said they would recommend LASIK to an immediate family member. Of those that had laser vision correction, 65.7% had LASIK and 34.3% had PRK (flapless LASIK). In a different study of physicians who underwent LASIK at a teaching hospital in Cleveland, OH, over a long period of time encompassing various generations of technology, 95.3% were satisfied with their results and 84.8% said they ended up with vision that actually was better than they had previously with glasses or contact lenses. Those of us that work with these procedures day in and day out see the incredible results that can be achieved and deeply believe in these procedures. Certainly, I’ve had vision correction surgery on my eyes and I have performed it on other ophthalmologists and optometrists as well as on my own family members and friends.
