Local parks in Malibu include Malibu Bluff’s Park, Malibu Creek State Park, Leo Carrillo State Beach and Park, Point Magu State Park, and the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area. Malibu was originally settled by the Chumash, who named the area Humaliwo, or the surf sounds loudly. The name Malibu derives from this word as the hu is not stressed.
Malibu has suffered from various devastating wildfires, including the Dayton Fire, the Decker Fire, and the Corral Fire. Residents of Malibu have also had to contend with several major landslides.
Malibu is served by the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District with three elementary schools: John L. Webster, Juan Cabrillo, and Point Dume. Malibu is also served by Malibu High School. At a college level, Malibu is served by Pepperdine University, Santa Monica College, and Moorpark College.
