The San Fernando Valley is bounded by the Santa Susana Mountains to the northwest, the Simi Hills to the West, the Santa Monica Mountains and the Chalk Hills to the south, the Verdugo Mountains to the east, and the San Gabriel Mountains to the northeast.
The economy of the San Fernando Valley is varied. The San Fernando Valley is home to many companies in the motion picture, recording, and entertainment businesses. Formerly, the San Fernando Valley was a famous hub of aerospace and nuclear technology development, housing such companies as Lockheed, Rocketdyne, and Litton Industries.
Major freeways cross the San Fernando Valley, including Interstate 405, the San Diego Freeway, U.S. Route 101, the Ventura Freeway, State Route 118, the Reagan Freeway, State Route 170, the Hollywood Freeway, Interstate 210, the Foothill Freeway, and Interstate 5. Major streets include Ventura Boulevard, Sepulveda Boulevard, Victory Boulevard, Mulholland Drive, and San Fernando Road.
Besides car transportation, many patients use public transportation to come up from the San Fernando Valley to Ventura to the Shapiro Laser Eye Center for LASIK and PRK laser eye surgery. Metrolink Commuter Rail has a Ventura County Line that links the San Fernando Valley to Ventura. Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner also connects the San Fernando Valley to Ventura County.
The political history of the San Fernando Valley is quite colorful. In the late 19th century, the City of Los Angeles won the water rights to water all surface water and water under the San Fernando Valley. Water access was used as an incentive to coax communities in the San Fernando Valley to join the City of Los Angeles. Starting in the 1970s, a movement for the San Fernando Valley to secede from Los Angeles gained momentum. Most recently, Measure F was proposed in 2002 to create a separation from Los Angeles, but it was defeated in the polls.
