NFL QB Carson Wentz Has Laser Eye Surgery

Recently, a patient in my Santa Barbara office who plays soccer asked me about someone playing a high impact sport having LASIK laser eye surgery. I told him that many professional athletes over the years have undergone PRK or LASIK laser vision correction to improve their performance in their sport. One national league pitcher I performed PRK laser vision correction on said that his pitching improved to a whole new level with the improved vision the surgery gave him. This past off season, the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles, Carson Wentz, had PRK laser vision correction. Wentz said, “It’s pretty cool to wake up in the morning and not have to throw contacts in. It’s been very beneficial.” Wentz isn’t the only NFC East quarterback to have laser vision correction to optimize their game. Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins also recently had laser eye surgery and now has better than 20/20. PRK is just like LASIK, except no flap is created, so there is no chance for traumatic injury to a LASIK flap. For this reason, PRK is often the preferred laser eye surgery for those who may be exposed to trauma. PRK is the laser eye surgery of choice, for example, for the US Navy Seals for this reason. PRK has longer recovery than LASIK because there is no flap, but otherwise is almost the identical procedure. PRK is often called “flapless LASIK.”
