Pupil Size, Night Vision, and LASIK

Abstract

The relationship between pupil size and night vision quality after LASIK is examined. Night vision problems after LASIK statistically have been more correlated to the use of conventional LASIK rather than customized wavefront LASIK. In particular, patients undergoing conventional LASIK with preoperatively high levels of myopia and astigmatism are more at risk for night vision problems after surgery. A review of the optics behind this phenomenon, including an exploration of the role of spherical aberration, is conducted. Pupil size is found not to have a primary contributing role to night vision problems. Wavefront laser vision correction, through its effects on corneal aberrations and spherical aberration in particular, is shown to produce better night vision outcomes than conventional laser vision correction surgery.
