A patient from Ventura who has dry eyes and is considering LASIK asked me what we can do to improve her dry eye before surgery. It is important to treat pre-existing dry eye before LASIK as this makes for smoother healing with less dry eye after laser eye surgery. One of our most important tools for treating dry eyes is the use of prescription anti-dry eye drops. Currently there are two such drops approved for by the FDA: Restasis and Xiidra. Both drops are anti-inflammatory in their action as a large component of dry eye is underlying inflammation of the surface of the eye, from hormonal, nutritional, or even autoimmune causes. Until now, both Restasis and Xiidra were only available in single dose ampules. Restasis is now bringing to market a multi-dose bottle of non-preserved Restasis drops. What is unique about this is that most drops that are available in multi-dose bottles have preservatives in them which can be irritating to the eye, which is why most manufacturers have to use individual, single use, ampules for non-preserved drops. The maker of Restasis, however, has figured out an ingenious bottle design that allows multiple dosing without preservatives through use of a unidirectional valve with a filter. We frequently use either Restasis or Xiidra on LASIK patients even if they do not have pre-operative dry in order to minimize dry eye after LASIK. The availability of this type of packaging will be more convenient for many patients.
